Basic Chicken Terminology

Bantam: A small chicken, usually a miniature version of a standard breed.
Broiler: A fast growing chicken raised for meat. Typically a Cornish x Rock hybrid.
Capon: Male chickens that have been castrated, traditionally for meat production purposes.
Chick: A very young chicken.
Cock: A male chicken over one year old.
Cockerel: A male chicken under one year old.
Coop: A house or shelter for chickens, typically enclosed on all four sides.
Hen: A mature female chicken that is over one year old.
Layers: Also known as laying hens, these are hens kept for egg production.
Pullet: A female chicken under one year old..
Rooster: A male chicken over one year old.
Run: An enclosed area outdoors, usually connected to a coop, for chickens to be outside and protected during the day.
